A Note on the Green - Schwarz Mechanism in Open - String Theories
An interesting feature of some open superstring models in is the
simultaneous presence, in the spectrum, of gauge fields and of a number of
antisymmetric tensor fields. In these cases the Green-Schwarz mechanism can
(and does) take a generalized form, resulting from the combined action of all
the antisymmetric tensors. These novelties are illustrated referring to some
simple rational models in six dimensions, and some of their implications for

Pair Creation of Open Strings in an Electric Field
We calculate exactly the rate of pair production of open bosonic and
supersymmetric strings in a constant electric field. The rate agrees with
Schwinger's classic result in the weak-field limit, but diverges when the
electric field approaches some critical value of the order of the string

Monarch butterflies use an environmentally sensitive, internal timer to control overwintering dynamics
The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) complements its iconic migration with diapause, a hormonally controlled developmental programme that contributes to winter survival at overwintering sites. Although timing is a critical adaptive feature of diapause, how environmental cues are integrated with genetically‐determined physiological mechanisms to time diapause development, particularly termination, is not well understood. In a design that subjected western North American monarchs to different environmental chamber conditions over time, we modularized constituent components of an environmentally‐controlled, internal diapause termination timer. Using comparative transcriptomics, we identified molecular controllers of these specific diapause termination components. Calcium signalling mediated environmental sensitivity of the diapause timer, and we speculate that it is a key integrator of environmental condition (cold temperature) with downstream hormonal control of diapause. Juvenile hormone (JH) signalling changed spontaneously in diapause‐inducing conditions, capacitating response to future environmental condition. Although JH is a major target of the internal timer, it is not itself the timer. Epigenetic mechanisms are implicated to be the proximate timing mechanism. Ecdysteroid, JH, and insulin/insulin‐like peptide signalling are major targets of the diapause programme used to control response to permissive environmental conditions. Open Descendants in Conformal Field Theory
Open descendants extend Conformal Field Theory to unoriented surfaces with
boundaries. The construction rests on two types of generalizations of the
fusion algebra. The first is needed even in the relatively simple case of
diagonal models. It leads to a new tensor that satisfies the fusion algebra,
but whose entries are signed integers. The second is needed when dealing with
non-diagonal models, where Cardy's ansatz does not apply. It leads to a new
tensor with positive integer entries, that satisfies a set of polynomial

Perturbative and Non-perturbative N =8 Supergravity
We study extremal black holes, their ADM mass and area of the horizon in N =
8 supergravity. Contrary to intuition gained from N = 2, 4 theories, in N = 8
supergravity BPS states may become massless only at the boundary of moduli
space. We show that stringy states described in [1], which have no mass gap and
survive in the toroidal compactification in addition to massless states of
perturbative N = 8 supergravity, display a null singularity in four-dimensional
space-time, when viewed as solutions of N = 8 Einstein equations. We analyze
known methods of resolving such singularities and explain why they do not work
in D=4, N = 8 supergravity. We discuss possible implications for the issue of
UV finiteness of the four-dimensional N = 8 perturbation theory.Comment: 5p, few corrections and improvements, references added, published in

New Couplings of Six-Dimensional Supergravity
We describe the couplings of six-dimensional supergravity, which contain a
self-dual tensor multiplet, to anti-self-dual tensor matter multiplets,
vector multiplets and hypermultiplets. The scalar fields of the
tensor multiplets form a coset , while the scalars in the
hypermultiplets form quaternionic K\"ahler symmetric spaces, the generic
example being . The gauging of the compact
subgroup is also described. These results generalize
previous ones in the literature on matter couplings of supergravity in
